When we talk about fitness, often times you only think about the exercise aspect of it. Schools never really focus on healthy eating and eating habits. But in DRSS, we exercise as well as learn about healthy eating. This year, we tried something new which was the SuperTracker. The SuperTracker is an online program that we can use to track what we eat in a day. It does this by letting us put in every single thing we eat in a day. Once you are done, it gives you the reports like the calories, proteins, fats, etc. There was a 28 day challenge that we did where we improved upon a physical skill over 28 days. We also had fitness 2-3 times a week, which helped us improve our body’s strength and endurance. Because of all this, in wellness I think my endurance got a lot better.

My first piece of supporting evidence is the 28 day challenge. The 28 day challenge was a mini-project that we did in W&F. We started a unit about healthy bodies that time, so our goal was to become healthier by the end of the project. For this project to work, we had to take some data before the challenge. This meant that we picked an area we wanted to improve in (pushups, sit ups, or mile time) and performed activity. I chose the mile run and got 8:28 on the run. Then, I researched what the ideal mile time for my age was and that turned out to be 8:06. I had to improve my mile time by a lot. We got a packet which was supposed to be the actual challenge. Each week, we had to do some form of exercise that helped us get to the ideal mile time. Since I had mile time, I chose to run half a mile for 2 days, high knees and jumping jacks for 3 days, and soccer for 2 days. Every week, I could see the improvement in my mile time. When the challenge was over, we had to compare the data from the first time we ran and compare it to our new data. So we ran again for one mile and this time I got a 7:38 mile time. I had beat my goal of getting 8:06. I felt so much better . In just 4 weeks, I improved my mile time and proved that I could be a way healthier person.

My second artifact for my improvement in fitness was the SuperTracker activity. The SuperTracker activity was a mini-project that we did in wellness class. It enabled us to see what foods we are eating. SuperTracker is basically a website (insert link here) which tracks the food that you eat. It doesn’t really do it for you, but you have to type in all the foods that you ate that day. It goes through its database and checks for all the nutrition content of the food. In the end when you are done typing up all your food, it calculates how many calories you ate for the day, along with other nutrients like sodium, fats, proteins and carbs. This can be really helpful because we could see where we were going over our daily allowance. For me, I was going over my daily allowance of sodium, and I was under my allowance of leafy green vegetables. The next day, we came back to SuperTracker and we were told to model a healthy meal using SuperTracker. This meant that the calories, sodium, and other nutrients had to stay at a controlled amount. It was very hard for me at first because I made some unhealthy choices and the fats section shot up really quickly, but then I revised and made healthier options. My final meal met all the requirements of a healthy meal. This meal was a meal that was a guide towards healthy eating. I tried to incorporate it into my everyday meal by trying to replicate it. It helped me become healthier because the food is also one part of your health. It is good to regulate your fat, sodium and sugar intake and keep an eye on them, which is exactly what we did. If I eat healthy, I think that my body will be fitter. I can regulate how fit my body is by regulating what goes into my body. If I was fitter, my mile would be better.

Having good health is something that I am going to have to have for the rest of my life. It is always good to stay fit. And the knowledge that this class has given me will stick with me forever. I will always try to get a better mile time every time I run. The 28-day challenge helped me build my endurance and Supertracker helped my maintain that endurance. I will try to use it next year outside of school because we don’t have fitness next year. I think that my growth this year will help me exponentially in the coming years. We have a lot of stress coming our way, and healthy eating and exercising is a way to dodge that. We also learned about other things like drug abuse and refusal skills which I will hope to use in the future.
