Delco Park

Pushkar Shirahatti

5/24/19:

Our last field trip was to Delco Park. It was a 1.5 miles from school, so we walked there. We only had a couple of objective once we got there: meet with Rob E Boley and do the Small World activity.

Rob E Boley is a local author. He writes mostly horror books, and has just been getting back into poems. He is also an avid naturalist. He volunteers at the Beavercreek Wetlands and Serpent Mound to help with conservation efforts. He first introduced us to some poems about nature. He pointed out the metaphors in the poems, and then challenged us to find metaphors in the nature ourselves. Here’s what I came up with:

“Birds chirping to alarm the arrival of Spring”

“Trees shaking, as if they have a mind of their own”

“A new dimension seen through the ripples of water”

“A sea of different shades of green, painted beautifully by an artist”

We then proceeded to play a game at the volleyball courts called Nuke ‘em. It is played like volleyball, except you can catch and throw the ball instead of having to hit it. If the ball is dropped in close proximity to you, you are out. Near the volleyball pit was a patch of grass where I decided to do the Small World activity. From a standing position, I noticed grass, some weeds, and some flowers. When I kneeled down, I started noticing little creatures moving, like black ants. When I lay down, I started seeing things like a clover mite, a really small red bug. I started tracking their paths, weaving through the strands of grass. It was crazy to think just how massive the world (or even the park) is for these tiny insects.
